Switch Stance Portable Sit-Stand Desk Review

The Switch Stance portable sitting or standing desk addition is a clever, lightweight, and very portable solution for making your desk more ergonomic. The Switch Stance was first offered on Kickstarter and was successfully funded in 2016. My experience with the desk has been great and later I provide some information on what I like, don’t like, and how I suggest you get the most from it.

The Switch Stance is made from cardboard and some velcro. It comes perfectly shaped and pre-moulded so that when you get it you can use it immediately. The box it arrives in is flat and rectangular and you might even wonder what it was that you ordered that was so light. Pulling it out and giving it a try is very simple. The larger box portion goes on the bottom and the folded/velcro portion opens up to be the top section. It is really easy to open, setup, adjust, and pack up. I put it right on top of my sitting desk by just moving my monitor back and was up and running in seconds.

First Impressions

It’s ease of setup was awesome and I love that no assembly was required. Here are my first impressions:

  • The desk is surprisingly sturdy
  • It’s great to be standing at my desk instead of sitting
  • The height of my laptop sitting on the top flat is a little lower than I prefer for a permanent workstation but this is great for a portable station.
  • There is plenty of room on the top shelf
  • The bottom shelf is wider and deeper than the top shelf but as you can see in the picture, it isn’t enough for a full-size keyboard and ergonomic mouse
  • It is a little louder than I expected… there seems to be some more sound coming at me from the keyboard in this position and I’m not sure if it is the desk or my head position while standing
  • The sides of the Stand Steady create some space along the desk it sits on and this is really convenient for saving table space down below. I quickly had my pens and glass in that space nice and tucked in
  • The phone holder really works. At first I was sceptacle but it is in a convenient location and out of the way. If you want to see your notifications come in though you’ll probably put it on the top shelf

This is a super portable desk that I can take with me to client work spaces, the library, or other places for a quick, light, and easy workstation that can move with me. That said, this wouldn’t be my choice if I had to setup shop for a week or more in a single location, based on the keyboard and mouse that I currently use. With a smaller human interface setup I think this would work great as a super-low-cost option to get you standing or switching back and forth during a day.

One more thought. There is a lot of space here for customizing your desk. This thing is made of cardboard. It’s brown. You could paint it. You could have a spray paint artist paint it. You could have people sign it. You could make cuts to customize the setup. Whatever you do, have fun with it.
